The procedure is straightforward and typically takes 30–60 minutes on a cooled oven. Do not attempt installation while the oven is hot or while the main gas supply is open.

Step 1 — Shut down oven and close gas supply

Turn the oven control knob to OFF. Close the main gas supply valve at the wall. Allow the oven to cool completely — minimum 2 hours after last use. The clay pot and copper exterior retain heat for extended periods; do not proceed until the oven is fully cool to the touch. Minimum cooling time: 2 hours.

Step 2 — Locate and access the existing pilot assembly

The pilot burner is positioned at the base of the clay or stainless pot interior, accessible through the oven mouth. The thermocouple connects to the gas valve body at a small nut fitting on the valve’s side. Trace the pilot gas line from the pilot burner back to its valve connection point.

Step 3 — Disconnect the existing assembly

Using an appropriately sized spanner, carefully loosen and remove the thermocouple connection nut at the gas valve. Disconnect the pilot gas line at its valve fitting. Remove the pilot burner from its mounting location at the base of the pot. Note the exact routing of the pilot gas line before removal — the AS13 replacement must follow the same path.

Step 4 — Install the AS13 replacement assembly

Mount the AS13 pilot burner in the correct position at the base of the pot. Route the thermocouple and pilot gas line following the same path as the removed assembly. Connect the thermocouple nut to the gas valve — hand-tighten then snug with a spanner. Do not overtighten; thermocouple nuts are typically brass and will distort. Connect the pilot gas line. Confirm the thermocouple tip is positioned directly in the path of the pilot flame.

Step 5 — Open gas supply and check all connections for leaks

Open the main gas supply valve. Apply approved gas leak detector solution (or soapy water) to every connection made during installation. Inspect for any bubble formation indicating a gas leak. If a leak is detected, immediately close the gas supply and re-tighten the relevant fitting before proceeding. Do not proceed with any leak present.

Step 6 — Light the pilot and test the hold function

Turn the control knob to PILOT, depress and hold, and ignite the pilot burner. Hold for a full 45 seconds. Slowly release the knob — the pilot must remain lit without manual support. This confirms the AS13 thermocouple is at operating temperature and generating sufficient voltage to hold the safety valve open independently. If the pilot fails to hold, check thermocouple tip position relative to the flame and repeat. Hold 45 seconds minimum.

Step 7 — Commission to full operating temperature and verify

Turn the control knob to the desired operating heat setting. Confirm the main burner ignites cleanly from the pilot. Bring the oven to full operating temperature (700–900°F) and verify that the pilot flame remains stable throughout the heat-up cycle. The AS13 replacement is fully commissioned and the oven is ready for service. Allow 20–30 minutes to operating temperature.
