Ingredients
For the Chicken:
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp oil (for searing or marinating)
- Tandoor marinade is optional but great for added flavor.
- 2 tbsp plain yogurt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp cumin
- ½ tsp turmeric
For Soup Base:
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 3 medium carrots, sliced
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1½ cups diced potatoes
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 3 cups chicken broth
- ½ cup heavy cream or milk
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- ½ tsp black pepper
- Salt to taste
For Dumplings:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp cold butter (cubed)
- ½ cup milk
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions
Instructions – what are the steps to be followed for making the Instant Pot chicken and dumplings?
Step 1. Prep the Chicken
- To start the procedure, first pat the chicken dry and season it well with pepper, salt, and garlic powder. If you want the added flavours, make sure to marinate it in lemon juice, yoghurt, paprika, and turmeric, and continue doing so for around 30 minutes before searing or tandoor cooking.
Step 2. Optional Tandoor Roasting (Flavor Booster)
- Though it is optional, it will serve as a flavour booster. For the ones that are looking for a restaurant-style recipe, it is highly recommended to thread the marinated chicken onto the skewers. And now place them in the R26 Residential Mini Tandoor. Make sure to roast it for around 10 minutes. Now flip it halfway through until you notice that charring. Make sure to rest it for some time, and then chop it down into bite-sized pieces.
- As we have already mentioned, the step is optional, but if you want the wood aroma in it, make sure to go ahead with this step. It will be merging the chicken pot pie soup with the grilled perfection.
Step 3. Sauté the Veggies in the Instant Pot
- Now you have to just set the Instant Pot to auto mode. Melt the butter and then add the onions and garlic. Make sure to saute it for around 15 to 3 minutes until it becomes completely soft and flavorful, with a great aroma. Now you can carefully add the carrots, a pinch of salt or pepper, in addition to the celery and potatoes. Make sure to saute it for another 2 minutes.
Step 4. Add Chicken, Soup Base, and Seasoning
- Now just go with stirring in the cream of the Chicken Soup and the chicken that you have already prepared. You can use both types, that is, raw or the pre-tandoor roasted. In the case you’re using the raw chicken, make sure that you are fully submerging it. After this is done, cancel this auto mode. Now secure the lid, set the valve to the sealing Mode. Cook on the manual pressure for around 10 minutes. When it is done, let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes at a stretch. Now perform a quick release for the remaining pressure.
Step 5. Shred Chicken & Add Peas and Cream
- You can just carefully remove the chicken from the pot and stir it using 2 forks. Return the shredded chicken to the instant pot. Make sure to stir in the frozen peas and heavy cream or milk for the added richness. Now you can turn the Instant Pot back to the saute mode. Just make sure to taste and adjust the salt and pepper according to your preferences. Be sure to simmer gently while also preparing the dumplings
Step 6. Make the Dumplings
- Take a ball, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, salt, and the chopped parsley. Now cut in the cold butter until the mixture looks crumbly. Pour in the milk and stir just until it is combined. Make sure not to overmix it. Now you will have a thick and spoonable dough. Use a tablespoon, drop the dumpling dough directly into the bubbling soup. Space them slightly apart for distinction. Now cover it with a glass lid, or also, you can alternatively loosely place the Instant Pot. Put the lid on top, but make sure not to lock it. Let the dumplings cook on themselves in the simmering soup for around 10 to 12 minutes at a stretch. Or also, you can leave it in that position until you notice them puffing up, and cooking thoroughly.
Step 7. Serve and Garnish
- Ladle the rich chicken and dumplings into the bowls. Make sure that each of them is becoming very fluffy, like a biscuit. Now, garnish with the extra parsley or the cracked pepper, in case you prefer it. With that, you can be assured that it will be cooking for you the comfort of the Chicken Pie soup, with the grilled chicken, creamy broth, and the pillowy dumplings, all in one pot.
Pro tips for the perfect results
- For the creamy texture, it is highly suggested to use the cream of the Chicken Soup and finish with a splash of green. If you want a velvety mouthfeel.
- Regarding what you should not do, make sure to avoid overmixing, or it will turn too dense. Also, be mindful that you are not over stirring it. Once you have added it to the soup, you can just leave it in position for steaming.
- Regarding the tandoor substitute, you can use a grilled pan or a broiler in case you don’t have a tandoor. But in that case, if you want the authentic results, like the Charred edges, then you will have to use the tandoor. However, you can use the grill pan or the broiler, in case you want to mimic the smokiness.
- Also, you can reheat perfectly, because it will taste better even the next day, in case you are reheating.
